Episode 3: The One Where Terrance Can’t Say Scrimgeour

Thanks to Leah, who transcribed and edited this whole entire show!

Terrance: You’re listening to Hogwarts Radio, Episode #3 for August 9, 2008.

[Harry Potter Theme Song Plays]

Terrance: Hey everybody. Welcome back to Hogwarts Radio for episode numero treis. Number three, people.

Andy and Greyson: Wow.

Terrance: We’ve actually–we’ve got a full show lined up for you today.

Andy: That’s a lot.

Terrance: News segment, contest update, awesome main discussion. We hope you’re going to have as much fun as we are. So go ahead, pull up a beanbag chair or whatever you’re going to sit on, get comfortable.

Andy: Pour yourself a nice fizzy drink.

Terrance: Yes.

Greyson: Who uses beanbags? Really?

Terrance: Beanbag chair.

Greyson: I don’t.

Andy: We all know Greyson, you have a big fascination with beanbag chairs. Don’t deny it.

Greyson: Wow.

Terrance: So everybody, we hope that you’re going to like today’s show. It’s going to be interesting for Hogwarts Radio Episode 3. I’m Terrance.

Andy: I’m Andy.

Jackie: I’m Jackie.

Greyson: And I’m Greyson.

News and Announcements

Terrance: Yes, so let’s go ahead and get to the show, everybody. Greyson?

Greyson: Yes?

Terrance: What’s going on with the news? I mean, there’s–news has been slow this week, but news and announcements from us. What do we have? What’s going on?

Greyson: Well, Terrance, I’m glad you asked me that, because we have a contest. Yes. We have a contest for all you guys, all you listeners, to design us a t shirt. So, design a Hogwarts Radio t shirt, but the trick is, it can’t say “Hogwarts” in it, and it can’t have anything Harry Potter related, any Harry Potter words. [Andy laughs] Because we don’t want to get sued for copyrights, so that’s going to be a challenge for all you guys, and the winner gets a free t shirt, obviously, with their design on it. So email all your designs to staff at hogwartsradio dot com. Be creative and have fun. Whoa!

Andy: Whoa.

Terrance: Do any restrictions apply?

Greyson: Some restrictions apply, see site for details.

[Terrance, Andy, and Jackie laugh]

Terrance: Andy, we have some forums up now, don’t we? What’s going on with that?

Andy: We definitely do. We created some proboard forums, which is pretty much just a cheap alternative, because we don’t want to pay for one. So basically if you want to go to our forums you can either go through the link on our main site or you can just visit hogwartsradiofans.proboards58.com and you can talk and be part of our whole growing community.

Greyson: Whoo hoo.

Terrance: Awesome.

Andy: Sweet.

Terrance: And Jackie. Jackie, you’re going somewhere this weekend, aren’t you?

Jackie: Uh, no, what gives you that idea?

[Greyson, Jackie, and Andy laugh]

Terrance: Huh?

Jackie: I’m kidding.

Greyson: Terrance’s whole setup was ruined.

Andy: Nice.

Greyson: I like it.

Jackie: No, this weekend I’m going to Terminus in Chicago, Illinois.

Terrance: You’re so lucky.

Andy: Oh, and how about you tell our listeners who you’ll be meeting there?

Jackie: I’m probably going to be meeting Eric Scull there at the Mugglecast meetup.

[Andy, Greyson, and Terrance sarcastically gasp and fangirl out]

Andy: Get my autograph! Ah, Eric! Oh my god, I love Eric Scull so much!

Greyson: His Tootsie Roll spiel was just so funny! Oh, god.

Jackie: Oh, I’m not even done yet.

Greyson: Okay.

Jackie: I’m not even done yet. Guess who I’ve heard–okay, guys. I’ve got some gossip.

Greyson: Oh my god.

Terrance: What? What?

Greyson: Please.

Jackie: Do you want to hear it?

Greyson: Yes, of course!

Jackie: Okay, okay, so I heard from my friend Shannon that my friend Ben and Dillon are also there. Ben Schoen and Dillon Spartz.

[More sarcastic gasping]

Terrance: Dude, I thought I saw Dillon at Portus. I was like–

Greyson: Dillon Spartz does the layouts on Mugglenet!

Terrance: I was like, “Is that Emerson?”

Jackie: Oh em gee.

Terrance: I was like, “Is that Emerson?” and all these girls, they turned around like, “Where? Where? Where? Where’s Emerson?” I was like, “What the?” [laughs]

Andy: Wow.

Jackie: Attack of the Fangirls.

Greyson: That should be a movie or a video–oh, I’m making that video now.

Terrance: Awesome.

Greyson: I just made it. Alright.

Terrance: Oh, wow.

Jackie: Just in to the studio. My sister is seeing a movie right now. She didn’t tell me which one, but she said that in the preview for Half-Blood Prince it’s rated R.

Greyson: There’s no way. That’s…

Jackie: I’m not even kidding, guys. I’m not even kidding.

Terrance: Huh?

Greyson: That’s got–no. Huh? Oh, that’s terrible. I just failed. Hold on, I have to redeem myself.

Terrance: Oh my goodness, that is a shocker.

Greyson: I doubt it, though.

Andy: No.

Greyson: We would have heard something before.

Terrance: Huh?

Greyson: And they’re not going to have it rated R, because they need to make more money, and they won’t make more money with a rated R.

Andy: Yeah, I don’t think it’s going to be rated R because most of the fan base is under 17.

Jackie: Alright, we’ll treat this as a rumor for now.

Terrance: But…

Greyson: Yeah, that’ll just be a rumor.

Andy: You heard it here first, guys. You heard it here first.

Greyson: It wasn’t really graphic enough for R, I don’t think.

Andy: Yeah.

Greyson: Highly doubtful.

Terrance: Hmm.

Jackie: Alright, we’ll treat it as a rumor, but…

Greyson: Yeah, it’s a rumor.

Terrance: Okay.

Jackie: But you heard it here first if it’s true.

Andy: Well, actually, before we move on, there are a couple things that are reaching the fandom. A couple stories. For instance, the Beedle the Bard book is going to be published for the public. Are you guys excited about that?

Greyson: Not really.

Jackie: Oh my god, I kind of am. Why aren’t you?

Greyson: I don’t really.

Andy: I mean, don’t you–well it’s…

Greyson: I’m sure I’ll get it when it’s like eight dollars on Amazon, I’ll pick it up, but…

Andy: Yeah.

Greyson: I don’t really care.

Andy: Yeah, definitely.

Greyson: It’d be fun to read, but it’s not…

Andy: I mean, I’ll buy it, yeah.

Greyson: Yeah, I’ll get it, but it’s not…

Andy: Mmhmm.

Greyson: It’s not that big of a deal.

Jackie: Yeah.

Greyson: I’m not getting the hundred dollar collector’s edition or anything.

Andy: Well, no.

Jackie: Yeah, definitely not, but…

Andy: I was noticing the cover, and the cover looks pretty cool.

Greyson: Yeah, it looks kind of cool, but it’s not that interesting. It’d be fun to read, I have no doubt about that, it’s just not very important. Not up on my priority list or anything.

The Owl Post: Listener Emails and Comments

Terrance: Moving on now, we actually had a couple of listener emails. People did email us in, so we’re going to go ahead and share those with you.

Greyson: And comments.

Terrance: And also some comments left on our website. We’re going to call this segment “The Owl Post.”

Andy: Yeah.

Terrance: This comes from Darcy, all the way from Australia. She writes, “Hey, you Hogwarts Radioers, I’m writing you to give my comments about your first episode. Firstly, I didn’t hear any serious problems with the audio quality. In fact, I thought it sounded really clear, especially for a pilot episode. I really enjoyed your discussion about the trailer. You both brought up some really good points about the trailer that I didn’t think of while watching it. Plus, I thought you were right about basically all the points you brought up, especially relating to Dumbledore. I agree with the characters you want to use in the theatrical trailer, especially the Weasley twins. I didn’t even think about that. I can’t remember if you said this or not, I’m pretty sure it was Andy, but I agree it would be cool if the HBP posters were the “You No Poo” posters from the front of the twins’ joke shop. Kind of what they did for Prisoner of Azkaban with “Have You Seen This Wizard?” for Sirius Black. On a final note, your podcast wasn’t boring.”

Andy: Yeah.

Terrance: “Any podcasts that talk about HP aren’t. And I know that’s something strange to say. I was thoroughly entertained and your intro music was cool as well. Sounds like a Dance, Dance Revolution of “Hedwig’s Theme,” which was awesome.”

Greyson: Yes.

Terrance: “In fact, they should put that song into a DDR machine. I would play it all day.” [Other hosts laugh] “Looking forward to future episodes, from Darcy.” Thank you very much for…

Andy: Yay.

Jackie: Aw, thanks Darcy.

Greyson: That’s nice. Thank you.

Terrance: …for sending that in to us.

Jackie: That is really nice.

Greyson: Okay, we also got a few comments, and if you guys want to leave any comments, you can go to hogwartsradio.com and on the left hand side, click the “Leave Us a Comment” button. Tatiana said, “Hogwarts Radio rox” with a little cheerleader smiley face. Sweetasin says, “A great site. Great job, guys.” Harry James Potter says, “Hey. Cool site. Good job. Did you guys do it all by yourself? Love the eppies, come them coming,” with a smiley face drinking coffee. Darcy, who we just heard from, said, “Nice site and great podcast,” smiley face. And the final one, Lauren said, “Hey, this is Jackie’s best friend, and I wanted to say that I’m not the biggest HP fan, but you guys were good. Def funny and entertaining. Yeah, so good job and I can’t wait to hear the next one,” smiley face with glistening teeth.

Terrance: Wow, how exciting is that?

Jackie: Shout out to Lauren.

Terrance: We actually got a couple of comments and a listener remark.

Jackie: And I’ve actually had a couple more comments on my facebook from some people, from some of my friends that have listened who have said that they think that we did a good job. So, yay.

Greyson: Yes, and you guys all tell your friends, all you listeners.

Jackie: Yeah, tell everyone you know.

Terrance: Tell everybody.

Greyson: Who likes Harry Potter.

Terrance: Everybody you know and don’t know.

Greyson: Yeah. Oh, yeah.

Andy: We will take them.

Wizard Wrock Song of the Week

Terrance: And moving on to our next segment here, another new segment, “The Wizard Wrock Song of the Week.” And Jackie’s going to go ahead and provide that to us. Jackie, what song is the song of the week?

Jackie: The song of the week this week is “End of an Era,” by Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls. Has anybody on the panel heard this song yet?

Terrance: I don’t know if I have or not.

Jackie: I can name at least five different people who, whenever this song comes on, will start to cry. [Terrance laughs] And that’s why it’s my song of the week, because it just really touches your heart, and it’s all about the fandom and how it’s not going to end, even though there are no books coming out it’ll still be fine.

["End of an Era" plays]

Andy: Alright, that was a great song.

Terrance: Wow, that was, that was awesome.

Greyson: I like that, that really brought a tear to my eye.

Jackie: Did you guys like it?

Greyson: Yeah, that was really good.

Into The Pensieve: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Terrance: So moving on to our main discussion this week, right now what we’re doing, since The Half-Blood Prince is coming out in November, we’re going to–we have a segment called “Into the Pensieve: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”Basically what we’re going to be doing is going through the book, giving you guys a quick chapter summary, some good points that we liked about that chapter, but more importantly, what we want to see about the chapter that we would like to see in the movie.

Greyson: Yeah, the purpose of this segment is more leading up to the movie, and it’s different from, you know, “Chapter by Chapter” and “Bit by Bit” because we’re not exactly looking at the book that much. It’s more about kind of looking forward to the movie, but we’ll still talk about the book.

Andy: And like comparing book scenes to how it could be translated to the movie.

Terrance: We’re going to start out with the first two chapters today, Chapter One, “The Other Minister,” and Chapter Two, “Spinner’s End.” So Chapter One starts out in which the Muggle Prime Minister recounts his encounters with Cornelius Fudge. Fudge visits him again with Scrimgeour, and we learn that Scrimgeour is the new Minister of Magic. We also hear of the wizarding world’s open war with Voldemort, along with dozens of Muggles being killed and Amelia Bones and Emily Vance and the Dementors and the giants have joined Voldemort. Just basically, the Ministry is struggling to fight, and that’s what we’re finding out is happening right now. Let’s go ahead and go around the panel here and find what, basically, we liked about the chapter and what we would like to see kept in the movie. Greyson, you want to go ahead and start that out?

Greyson: Well, I liked this chapter because it starts off different from the other books. It doesn’t start out with Harry, and it’s not back at the Dursleys’, back at Privet Drive, and it’s just kind of interesting to see the Muggle Prime Minister and how he’s reacting to all this stuff and how frustrated he must be since he can’t tell anyone about it, he can’t tell anyone that it’s magic, and just how out of the loop he really is. Well, not out of the loop. I don’t know. Someone else go.

Jackie: Well, I actually had a couple things that I thought would be really good. It says here on page three of the US edition that the little portrait would cough whenever he wanted to get attention of the Muggle Prime Minister, and I thought that would be good for a little comical moment in the movie. Do you guys think, on page thirteen of the US edition, they mention the death of Amelia Bones. Do you think they’re going to keep that in? I don’t think they will.

Terrance: No.

Jackie: Because it–they don’t really mention her.

Greyson: No. No.

Andy: Was she ever…

Greyson: Actually, I don’t think this whole scene is going to be in it. This whole scene is going to be cut in the movie.

Andy: Haven’t they already confirmed that this wouldn’t be in the movie?

Terrance: They actually haven’t cast Scrimgeour, so I really don’t–he’s not, I don’t think he’s even going to be in the film.

Greyson: Yeah, he’s not going to be in it.

Terrance: I mean…

Greyson: Which is upsetting, because what are they going to do for Deathly Hallows when he comes to give him the will, and all that kind of stuff?

Terrance: Yeah, exactly.

Greyson: Because I’m sure the movie audience is going to think, well why is Fudge still the minister if all this crap is still happening? I mean, that’s what I’d be thinking if we saw Fudge again in Deathly Hallows and he’s still supposed to be the Minister. Maybe they’ll just mention him in passing, kind of.

Terrance: Yeah, exactly.

Jackie: Maybe.

Andy: Yeah, that’s what I was going to say.

Greyson: Like, with the newspapers or something, like they did with the last movie.

Andy: Oh, god, I hope they don’t do that.

Terrance: They haven’t cast Scrimgeour yet, and I mean, it’s probably they just are going to mention him in passing, because they have other important scenes to get to. We learned probably, and this is just a rumor going around other sites, that the film’s going to open up with the attack on one of the Muggle bridges.

Greyson: Yeah, so we’ll still get some kind of aspects of this scene, but we’ll see the actual action, not the encounter between Fudge and the Muggle Prime Minister.

Terrance: Right, exactly.

Greyson: We’re going to see what they’re talking about, but not them talking about it.

Terrance: What do you think of the overall tone of this chapter? Keep in mind, we’re coming fresh off of Order of the Phoenix and the whole Dumbledore and Voldemort fight, and actually acknowledging that Voldemort is back.

Greyson: Well, I think for Fudge it has this kind of defeated tone. The whole chapter, he comes to the Prime Minister and he’s worried about stuff, he’s twirling his bowler hat around, and you can tell that something’s obviously bugging him, and he can’t do anything about it, so that’s got to be really frustrating. And then he gets sacked as Minister of Magic, and he’s a beaten man.

Jackie: Yeah.

Terrance: Do you think he’s taking it kind of light-heartedly?

Greyson: That’s what I got from it.

Terrance: You think he’s taking it light-heartedly, or…

Greyson: No.

Jackie: He sounds pretty defeated.

Greyson: I think he’s kind of putting on a show, because he doesn’t want to show how–I mean, he sounds defeated, but he’s not on his knees crying. But I think he’s just kind of hiding it.

Terrance: Yeah, that’s true.

Jackie: I also think this chapter also has like a very depressing tone, ever since like the first page. It’s telling you about all the horrible stuff that’s going on. And on the last page of this chapter, Scrimgeour says–well, the Muggle Prime Minister says, “But for heaven’s sake, you’re wizards. You can do magic. Surely you can sort out, well, anything?” and then Scrimgeour says, “The trouble is, the other side can do magic, too, Prime Minister.” And then that’s where the chapter ends.

Greyson: Oh, yeah, I love that line. I think that’s one of my favorite lines in the book.

Jackie: Me, too. If they did the scene in the movie, I would have wanted them to keep that line, but…

Greyson: Yeah.

Jackie: Since they didn’t.

Greyson: But yeah, if you were the Muggle Prime Minister, you’d be thinking the exact same thing. It’s like, these guys can make whiskey come out thin air.

Jackie: Yeah.

Greyson: Why can’t they just stop some guy from killing people?

Terrance: Yeah, exactly.

Greyson: That’s what I’d be thinking. I’d be pissed off, and like the Prime Minister says, who’s going to believe him? And everyone will think he’s crazy and his opponents are blaming everything on him. Definitely an ominous tone and a whole bunch of crap’s going down.

Terrance: Yeah.

Greyson: Final note, I don’t think this scene’s going to be in the movie. It’s not a very good movie scene, I don’t think, if it was.

Andy: Definitely not.

Greyson: You want to start a movie with something fast-paced.

Jackie: Something a bit more cheery.

Andy: Yeah, definitely not for an opening.

Greyson: The rule of filmmaking is start it off with a bang, and that’s what they’re trying to do with the whole bridge collapsing thing, obviously, and I guess that’s the right move. I mean this wouldn’t really be a great scene if you just watched the movies. It’d just be kind of dry, I guess.

Jackie: True.

Greyson: Damn shame.

Terrance: Andy, you want to go ahead and tell us about Chapter Two?

Andy: Yes, sure. Chapter Two is called “Spinner’s End,” and it starts on page nineteen of the American edition. In this chapter, we’re introduced to two shadowy figures that are approaching a dark, dirty river. And basically, we find out that this is Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange. And they–well, first of all, we notice that Narcissa is very nervous about something. She looks very tense, she’s very upset, and she’s very nervous. And Bellatrix is calm, like always, calm and cool about everything. So they arrive at Snape’s house, and immediately Narcissa asks him for help. And so they sit down, and Narcissa expresses her concern for Draco, who’s been given a task by the Dark Lord, Voldemort, so Narcissa asks Snape to watch out for him this year. And the chapter pretty much ends with Snape and Narcissa performing the Unbreakable Vow, which basically constitutes that…

Greyson: Yeah.

Andy: …if Snape doesn’t take part of his end of the bargain to take care of Draco, he’ll die. And that pretty much wraps up the chapter. Oh, yeah, Snape also explains that he’s working undercover at Hogwarts and that he really can’t give himself away, and basically Bellatrix is really nervous and thinks that they shouldn’t even be there because the Dark Lord will kill them. We also see a little cameo from Wormtail. And the whole chapter’s pretty much really dark and ominous, and it’s definitely a great transition from the last chapter, because we go from dark to darker.

Terrance: You know what I thought was a really awesome line in this chapter? It was when Bellatrix was getting all pissed off at Snape, and she was asking him all those questions, and he just responds all charismatically like, “Do you think that the Dark Lord has not asked me each and every one of those questions? And do you really think that, had I not been able to give satisfactory answers, I would be sitting here talking to you?”

Greyson: Oh, yeah.

Terrance: That was just like, sit down and shut up.

Greyson: When I first read this, I was convinced that Snape was a bad guy at the very beginning. Because he answers those with…

Terrance: Yes.

Greyson: They’re such great answers, and you can tell, Voldemort would have AK’ed him if Snape was lying to him, and there’s no way Snape could have weaseled his way out of it.

Jackie: I was so convinced he was evil.

Greyson: Oh, me too. I knew he was, but then, somehow at the end, I questioned it when he killed Dumbledore. I don’t know how that works, but…

Andy: No.

Jackie: No.

Andy: Who thought, at the end of this chapter, who thought that Snape could possibly be the Half-Blood Prince? Did that cross through anyone’s mind?

Greyson: No, I didn’t.

Andy: That didn’t even cross my mind.

Greyson: I always thought it was Voldemort, yeah.

Jackie: No. I was convinced that Tom Riddle was the Half-Blood Prince.

Terrance: Yeah, that’s all I thought it was Voldemort, because you figured, half-blood, and…

Greyson: Especially when we get into the memories and stuff.

Andy: Major component in this book is Draco trying to kill Dumbledore and Snape trying to help him, and so this chapter foreshadows so much of the book. This chapter will look so cool in the film, too. We see Snape at his house, we finally see the actress for Narcissa and Bellatrix again, so this will be a pretty cool scene. We see Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter, and all those cool actresses. So this will be a good scene.

Greyson: Yeah, but I don’t think Wormtail will be in it because it seems like too much to bring him back for a few minute scene, or however long it is.

Jackie: Actually, I’m on Internet Movie Database right now, and it says that he’s casted here. Yeah, so…

Greyson: Oh, really?

Jackie: Yeah, going to be there.

Greyson: That’s cool. Well, then.

Terrance: What did you guys think the deed originally was that Narcissa was so concerned about, that Draco would surely fail? Did it cross anybody’s mind that it was actually to kill Dumbledore?

Jackie: No, I had no idea.

Greyson: No, but I can’t recall what I thought it was.

Andy: Well, immediately I thought that, of course, what else would the Dark Lord want of Draco, but that definitely crossed my mind.

Terrance: I thought it might be to capture Harry, or something like that.

Andy: No, no, well, I didn’t think that, but that’s definitely something–but obviously, everyone knows that Voldemort wanted to take care of Harry Potter himself.

Greyson: Well, yeah, that’s true.

Andy: So that didn’t cross my mind, but when I read this chapter, it flittered through my mind that it could be Dumbledore that he’s after, but it didn’t stick, and it didn’t hold much to it.

Greyson: J.K. Rowling started it off, two chapters back to back, and they’re not–well, they’re not from Harry’s perspective, because none of the books are, but they’re not focusing on Harry. Normally in the books, like I said, we start off at Privet Drive, and Harry’s hanging out during the summer or whatever, but I thought this was kind of cool, how we saw what Voldemort was doing from different characters.

Andy: We see more of the behind the scenes things.

Greyson: Mmhmm.

Andy: That aren’t just focusing on Harry’s drama, but on the bad side of the drama and the good side of the drama, all the ministers coming together and congregating, and then we immediately see the bad side, or the alleged bad side, of Snape, Bellatrix, and Narcissa, all congregating together in Spinner’s End. So that was a really cool contrast. I could definitely see this being one of the early scenes for the movie.

Greyson: Yeah, I mean, this will be a really cool movie scene, I have no doubt, and you have to have it, because you have to put doubt in the audience’s mind for the end, and for most of the book when we see Snape acting suspiciously. Because that’s what worked so well in the book was this scene, and then we have it in the back of our mind Snape’s a bad guy, and at the end, it all comes together. So you have to have this scene in the movie, and they will. They better.

Terrance: Do you think people that haven’t read the books that are just watching the movies, do you think they would understand why Narcissa and Bellatrix are going to Snape? I think this is the first real introduction to Snape, to the audience who has never read the books as Snape as a possible bad guy.

Greyson: Well, no, because we had the whole doubt in Sorcerer’s Stone about him being a bad guy, and I think…

Terrance: Yeah.

Greyson: Has it been mentioned in the movies that Snape was a Death Eater? It was in Goblet of Fire, right?

Andy: Yeah.

Jackie: I was just trying to remember that.

Andy: It was in there.

Terrance: In Goblet of Fire, it was hinted whenever Karkaroff says, “You know what this means as well as I do,” or something like that.

Jackie: Yeah, they glazed over it when Karkaroff and Snape were in the closet.

Greyson: Yeah.

Andy: Well, do you know what I find interesting, is that this scene will be the first scene in all the books that will be in the movie that we know information from that Harry doesn’t know or find out about in tandem.

Greyson: Yeah.

Andy: And that’s like a first for the series as a whole, and especially for the movies because we’re always following Harry, and here we’re finding something out by ourselves without Harry. So we’re taking the journey–yeah.

Greyson: Yeah, because the only moment I can think of in the movies where we don’t follow Harry is when–is the couple flashback scenes with his parents and the beginning scene of Sorcerer’s Stone. That’s all can I really think of that’s really not…

Terrance: What about in Goblet of Fire? The beginning chapter with Frank Bryce?

Andy: That was his dream, though, wasn’t it?

Greyson: Oh, that’s true. Yeah, it was his dream.

Andy: Yeah, he was seeing it through Voldemort’s eyes.

Terrance: Yeah, that’s true.

Greyson: So most of the time we’re always looking through Harry.

Jackie: I saw one line in here that I really hope is in the movie because it just made me so angry, and it connects back to Order of the Phoenix, and Snape says, “And it certainly did help dispose of Sirius Black, though I give you full credit for finishing him off.”

Andy: Ooh.

Greyson: Oh, yeah.

Jackie: Okay, when I read this, I was like, wow, I hate you.

Greyson: Even when I read that line–even when I read that today, I was mad.

Andy: Wow.

Greyson: I read that today, and I was mad even though I knew that Snape is not a bad guy.

Andy: Geez.

Jackie: Geez, that made me so angry. I know he still hates Sirius.

Terrance: But even though he really wasn’t a bad guy, I mean…

Greyson: Oh, yeah.

Terrance: …he still didn’t like Sirius. He never liked any of the Marauders because of what they did to him and the way they used to tease him a lot.

Greyson: Mmhmm.

Terrance: So if I was in his position, I’d be like, “Screw you guys,” you know? “I’m glad that you’re gone.”

Jackie: Okay, Snape needs to get over it, alright? Wah. I was bullied as a kid. He needs to get over it.

Andy: Okay, well, moving on.

[Terrance laughs]

Jackie: That was mean. He was mean.

Andy: In this chapter, the Unbreakable Vow takes place, and obviously, people who are watching the movie won’t understand what that is.

Greyson: Yeah, but we didn’t either, at the beginning, did we?

Jackie: Well, it’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s an Unbreakable Vow.

Terrance: I think it will be something like them joining hands and then the wand and then the flash of light and like a little halo floating around them both, or around their hands, and then that will be it.

Greyson: Yeah, I think it will be like the thing comes out of the wand and then it’s kind of like around their hands, you know what I mean?

Andy: Are you expecting a good performance from Narcissa? Because she’s the new one in the scene, she’s the newcomer, so do you think we can expect a good performance from her?

Greyson: I’m not sure, and how are they going to explain who she is? Because they haven’t mentioned it in the movies.

Andy: I think if they give her the right hair and the right face and the right costume, people will pretty much know.

Greyson: But that will just come out of left field, though, because all we’ve seen through the movies is just Lucius and Draco, we’ve never seen Narcissa. So all of the sudden it will just be Narcissa Malfoy, and the audience will just be like, “What?”

Jackie: Well, in the beginning of the chapter, they have Bellatrix saying, “Wait, Narcissa, come back,” and like later in the chapter they actually mention Lucius when they’re speaking to Snape, so that might be a…

Greyson: Well, yeah. Yeah, but I mean, it will just come out of the blue. If you’re just seeing the movies, you haven’t seen Lucius’ wife and you haven’t even seen a mention of her.

Jackie: Yeah.

Greyson: Heard a mention of her, so it’s just going to come out of the blue.

Andy: Yeah.

Greyson: And this is going to be one of the first scenes, so I don’t know.

Jackie: If they set it up…

Greyson: They kind of backed themselves into a corner a couple times, once in awhile.

Jackie: Yeah.

Terrance: You know the performance I’m really looking forward to is, this is the first time we really see Bellatrix acting the way she is in the books, you know what I mean?

Greyson: Yeah.

Terrance: You know, it’s like she’s questioning about everything and everything and everything, because I mean, in the last movie we saw her–it’s still fresh in our minds of her just having that smile and that smirk after she killed Sirius, and then also we see her just go into a fireplace, and then boom, she’s gone.

Greyson: Yeah.

Terrance: So I’m really looking forward to her and her whole going off on Snape, that’s what I’m really looking forward to.

Greyson: And I think it’s cool how Snape kind of like, backhands her and mentions how the Dark Lord isn’t really trusting her lately.

Andy: I’m looking forward to seeing his amazing performance in this scene. I expect it to be really good.

Greyson: Yeah.

Terrance: Yes, exactly.

Jackie: I can just imagine–I can imagine him sitting on a big, poofy chair with a glass of wine, being like, “Oh, Narcissa, you can’t–you must not speak of the Dark Lord’s plan.”

Terrance, Greyson and Andy laugh]

Jackie: Shut up.

Greyson: But yeah, I think Alan Rickman’s–I really like Alan Rickman, and I think he’s one of the few things the movies have gotten right.

Andy: Yeah, definitely.

Greyson: Yeah, and I’m looking forward to seeing him.

Terrance: Yeah.

Greyson: And I picture him when I read the books, so I think that’s a good sign. That means he’s actually the same character I pictured.

Andy: So what do you guys think that Spinner’s End will look like in the film? I mean, they don’t always follow the exact descriptions in the books, but do you guys expect it to look really dark and dirty or disgusting?

Greyson: Dingy.

Andy: Or do you guys expect it to look very historic and…

Terrance: Yeah, exactly. Something–if you guys–well I don’t know if you guys have ever seen it, but I’m going to make a parallel here. Lord of the Rings, when they go into the village of Bree in the first film, and they go into that tavern, well, that’s how I picture Snape’s house.

Greyson: Yeah.

Terrance: Like in the style of that. Like an old, off to the side, dark, quiet.

Greyson: Yeah, that’s kind of what I pictured, too. Just sort of dingy, kind of a house you would just walk past and not even look at it because it’s just kind of there.

Andy: Talking about the chapter itself, do you guys find it interesting how much influence Snape had over the characters in this scene? Like, he was able to really successfully command around Wormtail and persuade him to listen to him, and he did the same thing with Bellatrix.

Terrance: Yeah.

Greyson: I thought it was cool how they kind of showed him as sort of like Voldemort’s right hand man, and it’s like Narcissa kind of looks up to him, like, “Oh, I knew you must know of the plan because the Dark Lord trusts you so much.”

Andy: Yeah.

Greyson: And I thought that was sort of cool how they had that respect.

Andy: Wormtail’s like, “You can’t tell me what to do. I was sent here to help you, not be your slave.”

Greyson: Oh, yeah.

Andy: And I found that so uncharacteristic of Wormtail because I always pictured Wormtail to be nothing more than an evil version of Neville, you know?

Greyson: Yeah.

Jackie: Yeah, I really…

Greyson: He’s just a coward, and he doesn’t like tell people…

Jackie: Confrontation is not his thing.

Terrance: I thought that was so funny, how Wormtail was standing behind the door and he’s listening in, and Snape throws that charm at the door, and all you hear is this crash and this little yelp. I thought that was so hilarious.

Jackie: Bellatrix said something about being in danger at the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix, and Snape was like, “Danger? You were facing teenagers.”

Andy: “Bellatrix’s astounded face glowed red in the blaze of a third tongue of flame, which shot out of the wand and twisted with the others and bound itself thickly around their clasped hands like a rope, like a fiery snake.” And I’ll find it really cool if they make it look like that in the film, because obviously, by now the moviegoers…

Greyson: Yeah, yeah.

Andy: …have determined that snakes are obviously something that should be feared in the wizarding world, so I find it interesting that, for the movie, it was a snake that bound the Unbreakable Vow. So that looks so cool in the movie.

Terrance: Yeah.

Greyson: Yeah.

Andy: To see like a fiery snake bust out of the wand and wrap around their hands, see Bellatrix’s snarling, glowing face watching with–I’m excited to see that.

Greyson: And for the movie audience, I don’t think they’ll really question if Snape’s a bad guy or not because at the beginning you see him answering all the questions, making the Unbreakable Vow, and then–and for movie watchers, it’s got to be like, “Oh, Snape just killed Dumbledore, he’s a…”

Andy: Yeah.

Jackie: This is it.

Greyson: Yeah, he’s a bad guy now, because there’s really not any clues to the contrary.

Andy: Like half of Order of the Phoenix.

[Terrance laughs]

Greyson: “Oh, Harry. Snape’s not a bad guy, come on.”

Andy: Yeah. “He’s a teacher.”

Greyson: Oh, yeah.

Terrance: So, is there any final thoughts from the panel about either one of these chapters about what we would like to see in the movie? Anything else?

Greyson: If they keep it the way it is in the book, “Spinner’s End” will be a really cool scene.

Terrance: Probably.

Greyson: I think it will probably be one of the best in the movie.

Andy: That would be so cool.

Terrance: Jackie, any final thoughts?

Jackie: Well, no. Not really. I think I said all I need to say.

Greyson: Didn’t they say they were adding a scene in the middle of the movie, like at the Burrow, where something attacks them there?

Andy: I don’t remember.

Greyson: Did I just dream that or…

Andy: Well, they were going to justify–they were going to add a scene in the middle where they justify the…

Greyson: Like, they’re adding a scene in the middle, or something, where they’re…

Marauder’s Map

Terrance: And our next segment that we have is our “Marauder’s Map” segment, which is a random fact or quote or one of the hosts or somebody’s going to do a voice and the listeners have to guess who it is. But I think today we’ll just do…

Greyson: I don’t do voices.

Andy: Aw.

Jackie: Boo. Yeah.

Terrance: So we’re going to go ahead and do a random quote today.

Greyson: This is not like Quote Quiz.

Terrance: And email us in with who said this quote, and we’ll…

Greyson: It’s different stuff, it just happens to be a quote today.

Terrance: No, it’s not like Quote Quiz, so email us in with who said the quote and we’ll mention you on the show next week.

Andy: And the quote is very vague. “‘Oh, come off it,’ he told the wall irritably, ‘that was clear instruction.’”

Greyson: That’s very vague.

Terrance: Well, that’s the quote for the week. Go ahead and email us in at staff dot hogwartsradio dot com with your answer, and that pretty much wraps up today’s show. We had a pretty active discussion. And that’s probably about it. It’s going to get better as it goes, trust me, and we have the contest out there right now, so we’re really really looking forward to you guys emailing us in with your designs and also with your thoughts. If somebody needed to get ahold of us, Jackie, how would they do that?

Jackie: Skype the username HogwartsRadio, email us at our first name at hogwartsradio dot com, or call us on the Hogwarts Radio Talk Back Line, which is 1-210-807-4088.

Terrance: So for this Episode 3 of Hogwarts Radio, I’m Terrance.

Andy: I’m Andy.

Jackie: I’m Jackie.

Greyson: And I’m Greyson Smith.

Jackie: Yay.

Terrance: Bye, everybody. See you next week.

Greyson: Bye.

Jackie: Bye.

Bloopers

Terrance: Yeah, it was just Andy and I on the pilot episode. In fact, we had to re-record that a couple of times, so that actually wasn’t our first time so it go progressively worse? No, better.

Andy: Better.

Terrance: Better as we went along.

[Everyone laughs]

Andy: Thanks, Terrance.

Andy: We will take over the Harry Potter podcasting world.

Terrance: And moving on to our next segment here, the Wizard Wrock band, sorry, the Wizard Wrock Song–Moving on to…

Greyson, in a silly voice: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, Terrance.

Andy: Insert song here.

[Jackie laughs]

Terrance: Yeah, well, they actually haven’t cast Scrimgower–ugh, Scrim–Scrimgeorge–ugh. Scri…

Andy: Scrimgeour.

Terrance: Yeah.

Terrance: Alright, everybody.

Andy: Hey Terrance.

Terrance: Have a great evening.

Andy: Hey Terrance.

Terrance: And we’ll see you next week. Bye.

Jackie: Bye.

Andy: Hey Terrance, you might want to say our names.

Jackie: We should probably out-tro.

Greyson: You’re Terrance.

Terrance: Oh.

Greyson: You’re Terrance.

Terrance: Oh my god, I forgot–oh, Jesus. Okay. Alright.
